Protests VS Politics.

Johannesburg -Northwest University political analyst Andre Duwenhage believes South Africa is in a vicious circle of political decay.Duwenhage was responding to the public demonstrations that have hit parts of the country on the 25th of march Duwenhage stated that socio-economic conditions ,poverty, unemployment and lack of skills included  were the contributing factors to the prepetuating violent protests.Duwenhage stresses that there is a need for strong political leadership and not cadre deployment at municipal level. The big question is...What are our political leadres doing to prevent these violent acts?.According to research done by Duwenhage, protests taking place are influenced by a number of reasons, other contributing factors include:

  • Dysfunctional institutions.
  • Factional fights: these bring unrest to the country, when they occur it should be reminded that lethal aid should be provided and not not high-minded sentiments.
  • Culture of violence: gang rape is popular in South Africa, but violence against women is a universal phenomenon.Unemployment in SA is really high, particullary amongst the youth and unskilled sectors of the population.Although violence toches everyone in SA most victamised are the vorking class, poor african communitioes and women.

Is our South African gorvenment doing enough to protect our nation?
Xenophobia and violent crimes also seemed to follow in the wake of protests. These protests are very arlarming.According to statistics, since 2005 on average annually South Africa has had 8000 public demonstrations. Between 2004 and 2007, 47 demonstrations turned violent and this is an indication that ordinary people who are staging these violent protests belive that violence is a mechenism to get political attention (The citizen).

How can violence be best avoided?..Duwenhge answerd, he put a lot of emphasis on the word implementation, "we do not need a plan on how to deal with this, but through implememtation of sound value system and high level politics and not corruption."  (The citizen)

  3. The former president, Thabo Mbeki during Xenophobia in 2008 did not do enough to protect the foreigners because He followed the protest against the foreigners,he was therefore criticised for failing to deal with the cause of Xenophobia
